ARRL Kids Day is Today, June 18th!

Twice a year, ARRL offers an event designed to promote Amateur Radio to our youth. Share the excitement with your kids or grandkids, a Scout troop, a church or the general public!

Kids Day is designed to give on-the-air experience to young people and hopefully foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older hams a chance to share their station and love for Amateur Radio with their children.

Kids Day always runs from 1800 UTC (2:00PM EDT) through 2359 (7:59 PM EDT) UTC. Operate as much or as little as you like.

Field Day 2017

Field Day 2017 is coming up this weekend! We will be holding a joint event with the Schenectady Amateur Radio Association (SARA) at the Niskayuna Soccer Park on Zenner Road (see map).  This year, SARA’s (K2AE) will be the main call sign will be the main call sign, while SMARA’s (W2IR) will be used for the GOTA station.

Field Day Set Up will be on Friday June 23 at 12:00pm. Please come down and lend a hand as there is so much to do! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Field Day starts at 2 PM EST on Saturday, June 24th and continues for 24 hours, ending June 25th at 2PM EST.  At that time we will need help breaking down and paacking up.

Field Day is open to the public and guests.  Operators are needed and encouraged!  Take the opportunity to gain invaluable experience on HF bands, CW and digital modes under the guidance of highly experienced Hams.  Bring family!  Bring a friend!

What is Field Day?

ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada.  On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations.

Field Day is a picnic, a camp out, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN!

It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities.

It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar.

The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions.

We use these same skills when we help with events such as marathons and bike-a-thons; fund-raisers such as walk-a-thons; celebrations such as parades; and exhibits at fairs, malls and museums —these are all large, pre-planned,non-emergency activities.

But despite the development of very complex, modern communications systems —or maybe because they ARE so complex—ham radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications in crises when it really matters. Amateur Radio people (also called “hams”) are well known for our communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations

Kenneth H. Clikeman, AA2CW SK

For those of you who participate in the weekly nets, you may remember AA2CW was always the first to sign in until about a year ago. Also Ken was involved (often coordinating) in many of the public service events our club participated in.

He will be missed.
